Bogie Build

Step 1 Bogie Parts

The bogies contain lots of small parts, the smaller ones are supplied in frets with lots of extras in case of carpet loss or breakage.

This quick guide is going to follow the construction of a single 45 mm 3ft standard bogie. However, all bogies follow a similar construction path.

Step 2 Sides

Each side has two combined spring axle boxes glued over the bearing holes in alignment with the horn guides. Four spring hanger ends are then glued in the holes below the spring ends making sure that the holes align up down.

Next the spring hanger bolts can be cut to length (9 mm) from the copper wire provided and careful threaded through the hanger holes and onto the springs.

Lastly the two axle box covers can be added to the axle boxes.

Step 3 Sealed Bearings

On the inside face the sealed bearings can be pressed carefully into the bearing holes. Do not glue as a small amount of movement is beneficial for automatic alignment.

In the centre hole insert a square O with a peg on it so that it is aligned vertically

Step 4 Wheels & Preparations

Put the wheels on the axles and set to gauge 41 mm back to back for 45 mm. 28 mm back to back 32 mm. Glue the bearing covers over the bearings to keep them in place taking care not to glue the bearings.

Glue the rockers on the top cross piece. One bogie across the other along to allow pitch and roll for the carriage or wagon.

Step 5 Bottom Assembly

Glue the bottom cross piece to one side and the central upright. Put the wheels and axles in one side then glue and add the other. Ensure that tabs click into place and that the bogie is square.

Finally spin the wheels by hand. Allow the glue to set. The wheels may be a little stiff at first, but they normally loosen up as the bearings self align in their pockets.

Step 6 Top Assembly

Attach the top cross member. Ensure that the tabs click into place. Glue the handed cover plates on the sides over the cross member holes.

Leave to set, complete the other bogie, attach, run and enjoy.
